Shakur Stevenson is reportedly close to finalizing a promotional agreement that could carry major implications for the trajectory of his career.
The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of boxing’s elite attractions, arguably among the top five pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. However, whether he can sustain that esteemed reputation remains an open question.
Given his raw skill, many analysts predict Stevenson will ultimately earn first-ballot Hall of Fame honors and possibly rank among the most talented boxers of the 21st century.
To fulfill that potential, though, Stevenson must test himself against a slate of top-tier opponents in and around his current weight class of 140 pounds. He has already taken a significant step in that direction by dethroning Teofimo Lopez via unanimous decision earlier this year to claim the WBO super-lightweight title.
Yet it is now uncertain whether Stevenson will pursue additional world titles or instead focus on bouts that maximize financial returns. According to boxing journalist Chris Mannix, Stevenson is on the verge of signing a promotional deal with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.
“140-pound titleholder Shakur Stevenson is finalizing a deal with Zuffa Boxing. Stevenson is set to join Conor Benn as one of the most high-profile names in the Zuffa stable,” Mannix reported.
It remains unclear whether Zuffa’s original plan to recognize only eight weight classes is still in effect. If so, Stevenson would likely campaign at 135 or 147 pounds should he sign with the organization.
Additionally, UFC president Dana White has emphasized that while he is willing to accommodate fighters on a case-by-case basis, he prefers they compete for the “Zuffa title” rather than sanctioning body belts. Stevenson has already become a four-division world champion, but whether he will further cement his legacy by collecting more historically significant titles remains to be seen. Given Zuffa’s close ties to Ring Magazine, Stevenson could still feature prominently on cards for traditional belts.
If the deal goes through, Zuffa would secure one of the sport’s finest fighters and a man many opponents want to face, significantly strengthening the company’s negotiating position.
