The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers have made a habit of playing tightly contested matchups this season.

Following a comeback walk-off victory in the series opener on Friday, the Royals aim to send the visiting Tigers to a fifth straight loss on Saturday night. These American League Central rivals first met in mid-April in Detroit, where the Tigers won consecutive 2-1 games before a wild 10-9 triumph completed a series sweep. On Friday, Kansas City trailed 3-1 but tied the game with two runs in the eighth inning. Kyle Isbel’s second RBI of the night — a two-out single in the ninth with a runner on second — secured a 4-3 win for the home team. The Royals have gone 11-5 since an eight-game losing skid.

“Everyone’s locked in, getting their work done. It’s an exciting group,” said Isbel, who is batting .342 over his last 13 games, per Royals.TV. “We’re out there playing hard every single night.”

Saturday’s scheduled starter for Kansas City is Michael Wacha (3-2, 3.05 ERA). After allowing 10 runs over 10 1/3 innings across his previous two starts, Wacha bounced back by surrendering only a two-run homer in the second inning plus three other hits and a walk over seven innings in a 6-2 home win against Cleveland on Monday. “You get ahead (in the count), good things usually happen,” said Wacha, who threw 54 of 79 pitches for strikes against the Guardians. “Throw that next strike and get back in the zone.” The right-hander, who turns 35 in July, is 1-1 with a 2.89 ERA in three home starts versus Detroit since joining the Royals in 2024, and holds a 2-3 record with a 3.32 ERA overall in 10 starts against the Tigers.

Detroit has managed only 10 runs during its current four-game losing streak. On Friday, the Tigers left nine runners on base and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. “We didn’t finish the game,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “You want to keep giving yourself as many opportunities as you can.” Despite the offensive struggles, Riley Greene collected three hits on Friday and is batting .423 in seven games this month. He is hitting .301 in 26 career games at Kansas City, though he is just 2-for-11 against Wacha since the start of last season.

Hinch announced that Burch Smith (0-1, 1.59 ERA) will serve as the probable opener on Saturday, with Ty Madden expected to handle the bulk of the workload. Madden made his first six career appearances (one start) for Detroit in 2024 but missed all of 2025 due to a shoulder injury. He was recalled from Triple-A Toledo earlier this week after superstar ace Tarik Skubal was placed on the injured list with an elbow issue expected to sideline him for roughly six to eight weeks. In his return to the majors on Monday against Boston, Madden threw five scoreless innings after Tyler Holton opened with one inning, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out seven in a 5-4 loss. “It just feels good, all the hard work to get back here,” said Madden, who has never faced Kansas City. “It’s nice to be back out there.”
