Former Italy international goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino has publicly stated that if Juventus truly want to return to Serie A title contention and be competitive in Europe, they need to sign a new goalkeeper. This remark has reignited the debate surrounding Michele Di Gregorio.
Juventus have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer, with Liverpool’s Alisson Becker reportedly emerging as a top target. Di Gregorio joined from Monza last year, initially seen as one of Italy’s most promising shot-stoppers, but his performances in Turin have sparked ongoing discussion. Sorrentino said: “Has Di Gregorio been playing better lately? Yes, he was also excellent at Lecce. But it depends on what Juventus aspire to be. If they want to win the Scudetto and become a top European side, they clearly need another goalkeeper.”
The club’s stance appears to be shifting. Juventus are determined to seriously challenge for the Serie A title next season and improve their status among Europe’s elite, so they will evaluate multiple positions in the summer window, with goalkeeper being one of them. The interest in Alisson is seen as a sign of diminishing confidence in Di Gregorio. The club believes that to consistently return to the highest level, world-class performances across the squad are required, and the current goalkeeping options may not fully meet that standard.
However, the debate is not one-sided. Some fans still defend Di Gregorio, arguing that the team’s overall instability this season has affected his form and the defense’s confidence. The question of whether Di Gregorio can grow into the goalkeeper Juventus needs for their long-term plans continues to fuel discussion.
