Alberto González: “I’d Like Our Game to Be More Brilliant

Alberto González expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance despite the lack of spectacle. “I’m very happy. It’s not easy to compete with the right intensity against a team that had a lot at stake. We started well, packed the middle, won balls back, and created chances. That allowed us to give a wake-up call at halftime—that wasn’t the way. We came out better in the second half, played more solidly, conceded little, and had many goal-scoring situations. The opponent stayed alive until the end, they sent in a cross that we headed out, and we reacted immediately.”

On Jefté and Capi, the coach noted: “It’s a shame there were more chances and the match could have been calmer. They worked well. Some positions ended up very fatigued, and we didn’t want to take injury risks. Everyone made a great effort.”

Responding to supporters chanting for him to stay, González said: “It’s an honor that people want you to stay and express it. I’m grateful and also happy for what the fans, the city, and the club give me.”

Regarding Pepe Sánchez: “He’s been out for a while. We had agreed he would play one half and we’d talk at halftime. His lungs were tired, but there was no muscular issue. He kept playing a bit longer—the idea was at most 60 minutes.”

On Capi’s development: “He’s working very well, showing he has the level and the willingness to improve. He has what it takes to become a great professional footballer.”

Reflecting on the team’s overall display: “It wasn’t a brilliant match. We all have our difficulties; they needed it more. We closed off their routes to play good football—they usually play more attractively. I’m happy with the defensive work, but I’d like us to link up more plays, for our game to be more brilliant. Today we created expectations of more goals, but the match was not eye-catching.”

On the relegation battle: “There’s a lot of parity. In La Liga, Espanyol is in the same situation as Cádiz. Football is very much about moments and dynamics. Cultura Leonesa had two clear counterattacks in the 84th and 86th minutes against Córdoba to win 2-1, but then in the 90th they lose 1-2 because of a turnover in midfield. You take several consecutive blows, you start to doubt, and when you doubt, what follows follows. It’s more mental than anything else. All the teams near the bottom have had chances to pick up more wins, but dynamics matter.”

On the low attendance: “We have to understand the situation—it’s a weekend, the good weather is starting, maybe some people have already gone away for the weekend or to the beach, I don’t know what it might refer to. We’re very happy with those who came; we always have to be grateful to them. We dedicate this victory to them.”

Looking ahead: “We are focused on Córdoba. They will be a very tough opponent. They demand a lot, and we’ll have to compete very well to get another win.”
